Four Things Every First-time Home Buyer Should Do

As you approach settlement, it’s time to prepare for the first few days in your new home.
- Transfer utilities. Contact the local electric, water, and gas companies. Having all of the utilities on and in your name the moment you walk into your new home will assure power, hot water, heat, and AC to make your first night comfortable.
Be sure to allow a few days of cushion when switching the utilities in case the title company and lender expedite an early closing. - After closing, plan to change the locks, which can be a DIY project for you - or contact a locksmith.
- Change your address. Notify all of your contacts of your new address - an email blast will accomplish this very efficiently. You can set up mail forwarding with the U.S. Postal Service here. Don't forget to update your voter registration, too.
- Prior to closing, familiarize yourself with the amenities that are near your neighborhood so you know where the nearest hardware store and grocery stores are located to get you through the moving-in process.
